A Man's World

Who remembers playing dress up as a little girl? Running into your mom or older sister’s (or both) closet and trying on their Sunday dresses and hills, and fly girl jeans and tops, or Friday night club “soul train” gear? Haha.

You would prance in front of the mirror as a little tot, or as a pre-teen (all you could do was pretend because you were way too young to go to the club) and be MC Lyte one minute and try on the next out fit and transform into fly, designer wearing, Foxy Brown. It was a time wear you had a choice to be what you wanted, when you wanted, and could appreciate ALL the styles of your favorite trend setting queens.

Nowadays, it seems as though you’ve walked into a closet of nothing but bikinis, daisy dukes and halter tops. But, what if you don’t feel like dressing up as Lil Kim today? What if today you just want to be Roxanne Shante' or Yo-Yo, and throw on some bamboo earrings and a fly trucker hat, with some lip gloss and Nikes and diddy bop down the ave?

I don’t know about you ladies, but that’s how I feel about music today. Like its December and I need a new fly leather jacket to keep me warm, but all the malls are selling daisy dukes and halter tops, which makes for a cold, cold world – a man’s world.

I miss the balance of the 80s and 90s. In the words of Nas, when someone could ask “who’s world is it?” you could scream loud and proud “the world is MINE”. Its time to make this Man’s World our world again ladies, and represent for ALL our sisters – all the BGIRLS, all the VIXENS, all the FLY GIRLS, and all our HARDCORE homegirls. To show these baby girls growing up, that to be a beautiful woman is to be well rounded and know that you have choices in this world. Be the woman you want to be and respect the other women in it. Celebrate brains, beauty, be sexy, be classy, be fly, be you, be a girl – whatever shape, form, fashion that comes in.

Recently, Erykah Badu released a video for her single ”Window Seat” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGt-Zg8aC5Q ) which has started a healthy dialogue of what Badu defines as GROUPTHINK:

“the unwritten rule that states; I will not express my true opinion if it opposes those I love and fear . I volunteer you to censor me, my thoughts, my individuality.” – Erykah Badu

It’s time for all the bgirls, fly girls, vixens, and hardcore she-rah’s to speak up and not allow this man’s world to censor us beneath bikinis, poles, and champagne bottles. Its now our time to be present and represent in this world we share with our brothers.

On that note, check out this latest single from my forthcoming release “9th Wonder Presents: Return of the B-Girl” entitled “A Man’s World” produced by Amp of Actual Proof. http://www.9thwonderpresents.com/main/blog/rapsody-releases-mans-world-track.html
